The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) invites applications for the 2025 Safe Haven Fellowship, a program designed to support scholars, writers, artists, and journalists who are unable to continue their work due to conflict or war. This fellowship offers a five-month residency in Amsterdam, providing a conducive environment for uninterrupted research and creative endeavors.

 

📝 Fellowship Details

  • Duration: Five months, with sessions from September to January or February to June.

  • Stipend: €2,500 per month.

  • Benefits:

- Subsidized accommodation in Amsterdam.

- Office space and access to research facilities.

- Communal lunches and participation in the NIAS academic community.

- Reimbursement for travel to and from Amsterdam.

 

✅ Eligibility Criteria

  1. Academic and Professional Background: For scientific proposals: Minimum of three years of research experience post-PhD: For artistic or journalistic proposals: A PhD is not mandatory; relevant professional experience is considered.

  2. Project Scope: Proposals should align with the humanities and/or social sciences.

  3. Language Proficiency: Applicants must have a good command of English to engage effectively with the NIAS community.

  4. Institutional Affiliation: Applicants should not be affiliated with institutions boycotted by the Dutch state.

 

📝 Application Process

Required Documents:

  • A detailed project proposal (maximum 1,000 words) outlining the research topic, relevance, methodology, and expected outcomes.

  • A motivation statement (maximum 150 words) explaining the necessity of the fellowship and circumstances leading to the application.

  • An updated CV (maximum two pages).


Submission:

Applications must be submitted through the NIAS online application portal.


Review Process:

Applications are evaluated based on the clarity and relevance of the project, feasibility, and the applicant's potential contribution to the NIAS community.
