The Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS) is calling for applications to its up to 10 AIAS-AUFF Fellowships for 2025-2026. Applications are open now. 🎓 Fellowship Summary

  • Location: Aarhus, Denmark

  • Host institution: AIAS, Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies, Aarhus University

  • Career level: Post-PhD researchers with 2 to 10 years’ experience after their doctorate by the deadline.

  • Target group: Researchers of any nationality and from any discipline, with an interdisciplinary research interest; must meet the mobility requirement (see eligibility).

  • Fields of Research: Open to all research disciplines, especially those that are interdisciplinary or propose collaboration potential with Aarhus University.

  • Duration: 23 months, full-time, starting 1 September 2026 until about 31 July 2028.

  • Application deadline: 28 October 2025, at 12:00 (noon) CET.

  • Start date: 1 September 2026.


🧭 Fellowship Overview

AIAS-AUFF is designed as an interdisciplinary, international research fellowship. Key features include:

  • Full-time employment at AIAS in Aarhus, with office space provided at AIAS. Fellows become part of an intellectual community with researchers from many disciplines.

  • Participation in academic activities: seminars, workshops, training, conferences. Regular interdisciplinary exchanges, including AIAS’ own seminar series etc.

  • A limited research budget is available for projects involving data collection (fieldwork, lab experiments), if justified in the proposal; though certain cost types are excluded (equipment, salaries of assistants etc.).

  • Relocation service: assistance with visas/work permits, finding housing, possibly language courses, spouse support, childcare options etc.



🎁 Benefits of the Fellowship

What fellows will receive:

  • Salary: According to Danish collective union agreements, based on seniority. Full employment contract.

  • Relocation travel costs: Covered (one-way), plus visa/work permit fees.

  • Relocation assistance: Practical help with moving to Aarhus.

  • Office space at AIAS, affiliation with relevant research environments at Aarhus University.

  • Training, workshops and conferences: Access to academic training, seminars, conferences, workshops both at AIAS and with Aarhus University. Some travel/conference budgets available per case.


✅ Eligibility Criteria

To apply, you must:

  • Hold a PhD, with 2–10 years of experience after PhD by 28 October 2025.

  • Be from any research discipline and of any nationality.

  • Meet the mobility requirement: not have resided or carried out your main work in Denmark for more than 12 months during the two years immediately prior to the deadline.

  • Have an interdisciplinary research project or strong interdisciplinary interests.

  • Show relevant collaboration possibilities at Aarhus University (i.e. some connection with AU is expected).

  • Submit the application online via GrantOne system.

  • Observe deadline: 28 October 2025, 12:00 (noon), CET.


🗂️ Required documents

  • CV, including list of publications.

  • PhD diploma.

  • Research proposal/project description, showing interdisciplinarity, feasibility for 23-month period.

  • Mobility statement: showing whether you have met the requirement re Denmark residence / work.

  • Any documentation of relevant collaboration with AU.

  • If the project requires data collection etc, a budget for those expenses (limited, and need justification).


ℹ️ Additional Information

  • The fellowship period is full-time and cannot be split or done part-time.

  • Fellows are subject to Danish employment conditions: full Danish social security, pension contributions, holiday allowances etc.

  • Special tax rule (“researcher taxation rule”) may apply for foreign researchers; AIAS & AU help with advice.

  • Evaluation and selection process: After application deadline, applications are evaluated between October 2025 and February 2026. Applicants notified by March 2026.
