    • Summer session: 10 weeks long, stipend US$3,400

  • Work Load: Interns work 20 hours per week during the session

📚 Internship Areas & Eligible Fields

The Carter Center offers internships in three broad domains. Depending on the area, interns may work on research, project coordination, advocacy, communications, operations, or policy.

  1. Peace Programs: Interns support Carter Center’s work on democracy, civil rights, conflict resolution, rule of law, and regional focuses. Specific programs include:

    • China Focus

    • Conflict Resolution Program

    • Democracy Program

    • Human Rights Program (e.g. Racial Justice, U.S.-India relations)

    • Inform Women, Transform Lives

    • Latin America and the Caribbean Focus

    • Rule of Law Program

  2. Health Programs: These include public health initiatives, disease eradication (e.g. guinea worm, river blindness, schistosomiasis, trachoma), mental health and caregiver support programs, and other global health areas.

  3. Operations: Internships in operations cover departments like: Communications, Development / Fundraising, Educational Programs, Human Resources, Information Technology, Strategy & Learning, Volunteer Services, and Art/Collection care.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

  • Be currently enrolled in a college or university (undergraduate or graduate), or be a recent graduate (often within 24 months).

  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. International students in U.S.-based institutions are eligible with institutional approval and proper work authorization (e.g., CPT, OPT).

  • Demonstrated academic strength (good GPA), relevant professional / personal experience or interests aligned with one of the internship domains.

  • Commitment to the weekly hours (20 hrs/week), and the full duration of session (15 weeks for fall/spring, 10 weeks for summer).


📝 Application Procedure

  • Complete an online application via the Carter Center’s Educational Programs portal .

  • Prepare required documents, usually including: résumé or CV, transcript(s), writing sample, essays / short-answer questions, letters of recommendation.

  • For international students: ensure you have the required work authorization, and approval from your host institution if needed.

  • Submit by the stated deadlines. Late applications are generally not accepted.


💡 Extra Information / Tips

  • All sessions are in-person, held at the Atlanta campus. Remote or virtual internships are not currently standard.

  • Interns sometimes may have chances to travel (e.g. to conferences, field work, election monitoring etc.), but these are not guaranteed and depend on program needs.
