🧩 Program Highlights

The MEG program is renowned for its interdisciplinary curriculum, combining natural and social sciences to address environmental governance challenges. With a diverse cohort of approximately 35 students from various geographical and cultural backgrounds, the program fosters a rich learning environment. Since its inception in 2005, MEG has produced over 500 graduates from nearly 100 countries, contributing to global environmental leadership.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality: Citizens of developing countries (DAC list)

  • Academic Qualification: Bachelor's degree obtained within the last six years

  • Professional Experience: Minimum of two years of relevant post-bachelor professional experience (excluding internships and voluntary work)

  • Academic Performance: Above-average academic record (upper third)

  • Residency: Not residing in Germany for more than 15 months prior to application

  • Additional Degrees: Applicants with an existing master's degree must provide a compelling justification for pursuing another postgraduate degree

🎁 Scholarship Benefits

  • Tuition Fees: Waived for scholarship recipients

  • Living Expenses: Monthly cost of living estimated between €850 and €950

  • Proof of Financial Resources: Required for visa purposes; can be demonstrated through a blocked bank account, scholarship, or a declaration of commitment

📝 Application Process

1. Online Eligibility Assessment (OEA):

Review admissions requirements and fill in the Optional but recommended Eligibility Form to confirm eligibility


2. Application Documents:

  1. DAAD Application Form (download DAAD Application Form)

  2. MEG Application form (download)

  3. Letter of Motivation, following this MEG Guidelines

  4. CV in Europass Format

  5. Transcript of Records (original and certified translation if necessary).

  6. University degree certificate

  7. Certificate for professional experience relevant to MEG

  8. Two recommendation letters

  9. English Language Certificate (originals or certified copies).

  10. Signed DAAD checklist VERY IMPORTANT

  11. APS Certificate: Compulsory only for applicants from China, India and Vietnam. Can be submitted later during matriculation.

Merge all required documents into a single compressed PDF and email to [info-meg@unr.uni-freiburg.de ] by 15 October 2025


Selection Process

Initial screening by the MEG program committee, followed by DAAD's final decision


6. Notification

Shortlisted candidates will be informed by end of January, with interviews conducted thereafter. Final results communicated by mid-February.
