East Africa Acumen Fellowship Overview

The East Africa Acumen Fellowship program aims to empower entrepreneurial leaders addressing poverty in innovative ways. Over a 6-month hybrid course, participants remain in their current roles while engaging in immersive leadership development activities designed to:


  1. Enhance Leadership Skills: Build adaptive leadership capabilities, navigate complex social issues, and inspire teams.

  2. Expand Impact: Learn tools and strategies to scale solutions to poverty while maintaining accountability to values and commitments.

  3. Strengthen Community: Connect with a diverse cohort of like-minded individuals and join Acumen's global alumni network of over 1,600 changemakers.


The curriculum draws from two decades of experience supporting social entrepreneurs, offering modules such as Polarity Management, Adaptive Leadership, and Authentic Storytelling.

 

Program Structure

  • One Virtual Orientation (3 days): Build foundational knowledge and connect with the cohort.

  • Two In-Person Immersives (5 days each): Engage in intensive workshops, assignments, and peer learning.

  • Three Learning Labs (4 hours each): Reinforce lessons through interactive virtual sessions.

 

Fellowship Benefits

the program covers the tuition fees for the fellowship itself, including:

Access to all training and curriculum materials.

Participation in virtual and in-person sessions.

Membership in Acumen's global alumni network (The Foundry).


Upon successful completion, Fellows gain access to:

  • Leadership Training: Develop moral and adaptive leadership skills critical for creating systemic change.

  • Global Alumni Network: Join a global community of 1,600+ leaders for ongoing support and collaboration.

  • Mentorship Opportunities: Access tailored mentorship from Acumen's community of experts.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Reside in East Africa and actively lead an initiative addressing poverty.

  2. Demonstrate an entrepreneurial mindset with a track record of social impact.

  3. Exhibit a commitment to leadership growth and moral leadership principles.

  4. Show a strong desire to join and contribute to a global community of changemakers.

  5. Women and individuals serving or identifying as Forcibly Displaced Persons (FDP) are strongly encouraged to apply.

 

Application Procedure

1. Prepare Your Application:

Review the Applicant Toolkit on the program’s website to understand the requirements and the application format.


2. Submit Your Online Application:

Applications open January 7, 2025, interested candidates can submit their applications online through the official website. The deadline for applications is set on February 7th, 2025.


3. Participate in the Selection Conference:

Shortlisted candidates will attend a selection conference on April 10-11, 2025.


4. Start the Fellowship Journey:

The fellowship begins on May 14, 2025.
