Curriculum, Program Structure, and Tracks

The AISS program is structured to provide a comprehensive education in AI and sustainability, with a focus on participatory design methods. The curriculum includes:


- Module 1: Introduction to Sustainable Societies

- Module 2: AI and Data-Driven Decisions

- Module 3: Participatory Design Methods

- Module 4: Interdisciplinary Project-Based Course

- Module 5: Professional Placement and Master’s Thesis


🧑🏻‍🎓 The programme consists of the following academically dependent specialisations, which are studied in parallel in 3 different locations:

  • Enrolling in Tallinn, basic studies in sustainable societies, AI and data and design.

  • Continuing in Porto with a mix of electives and basic studies.

  • Arriving at Tampere, studies are in the form of an Interdisciplinary Project-based course with real clients.

  • Last semester focuses on professional placement and master’s thesis and allows students to choose a place from Tampere, Tallinn and Porto for their studies.

 

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the AISS program, applicants must:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. computer science engineering)

  • Have a strong academic record.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in English.

  • Be open-minded, creative, and interested in sustainability and AI.


English Language Proficiency Requirements

The certificates acknowledged of English Language Proficiency are:

  • IELTS: 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5,5 in each component).

  • TOEFL iBT Test: score of 92 or above

  • C1 Advanced: 169 (with a minimum of 169 in each component)

  • C2 Proficiency; 169 (with a minimum of 169 in each component)


ℹ️ Exemption

Only applicants who have completed their previous levels of education or their previous studies fully in English in the United States, Canada, the Commonwealth of Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Switzerland or the EU/EEA countries (attested proof from the previous educational institution required), will be exempted from submitting an international language test as a proof of their English proficiency.

 

Application Procedure and Requirements

1. Programme Specific Requirements


I). Skillset

Applicants are expected to submit a portfolio with a set of selected works, demonstrating their previous experience and skill set on a professional level. The portfolio can include videos, images, sketches, 3D visualisations and graphic or interactive presentations, applications, GitHub links, research, or citizen activity projects. The expected format of the portfolio is as follows:

  • Up to 5 individual works with a brief description.

  • The individual pieces of work should represent and identify the candidate’s best skills.

  • Each work’s description should include a summary and relevant background information.

  • In all cases, the applicant should clearly explain the skill set required for the project and their contribution


II). Motivation Video

The motivation video (max 1 min 30 s) should provide a clear overview of the applicant’s intention to study in the AISS joint master’s programme. The motivation video positions the applicant’s interests within the current research topics and future workforce.



2. Other Mandatory enclosures

  • Identity: Identity Card or Passport

  • University certificate: Copies of education documents from previous degree.

  • CV

  • Transcripts: Academic Transcript of Records. This transcript must contain all the courses taken during the entire bachelor's degree.

  • English language: Evidence of English as outlined above.
