  • Australia and New Zealand: 1-year Fellowship with an AUD $20,000 stipend for research-related activities and travel expenses, including overseas travel, plus a Google Research Mentor.

  • Canada and the United States: Up to 2-year Fellowship with $85,000 per year: $70,000 towards tuition and fees and a $15,000 stipend for living expenses, travel, and personal equipment, along with a Google Research Mentor.

  • East Asia: 1-year Fellowship with a $10,000 stipend for research-related activities and travel expenses, including overseas travel, plus a Google Research Mentor.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility requirements for Google's PhD Fellowships vary by region:


1. General Requirements (All Regions):

  1. Students must remain enrolled full-time in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship.

  2. Google employees, their spouses, children, and household members are not eligible.

  3. Students already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible; government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.

  4. Past awardees from the PhD Fellowship program are not eligible to apply again.


2. Region-Specific Requirements:

  • Africa, India, Latin America, and Southeast Asia: Incoming or early-stage PhD students can be nominated; however, the Fellowship award is contingent on the awardee registering for a full-time PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) within the academic award year of the Fellowship award.

  • Australia and New Zealand: Early-stage students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD are eligible.

  • Canada and the United States: Students who have completed graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins are eligible.

  • East Asia: Students who have completed most of their graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins are eligible.
