HZB International Summer Student Programme

  • Duration: 7 July to 29 August 2025 (8 weeks)

  • Eligible To: Undergraduate students in relevant scientific disciplines from around the world

 

Programme Overview

The HZB International Summer Student Programme is a prestigious opportunity for 20 undergraduate students to conduct their own research projects alongside HZB scientists. Research areas include:

  • Photon Science,

  • Photovoltaics

  • Solar Cells/Catalysis

  • Electrochemical Energy Storage,

  • Quantum and Functional Material

  • Accelerator Research.

In addition to research, students will benefit from a rich framework program featuring visits to HZB research facilities, excursions to institutions in and around Berlin, workshops on science communication and entrepreneurship, and a final scientific poster presentation. Participants will work at either the Berlin-Wannsee or Berlin-Adlershof campuses, gaining exposure to cutting-edge technologies and interdisciplinary research environments.

 

HZB Research Internship Benefits

1). Financial Support

  • Subsistence allowance: €1,900 (for external participants) €1,000 (for students from universities in Berlin and Potsdam)

  • Travel subsidy: Up to €200 for EU participants and Up to €800 for non-EU participants

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be an undergraduate (Bachelor’s or Master’s)

  2. Major in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Structural Biology, Mathematics, Engineering, Life or Environmental Sciences, or related disciplines.

  3. Have completed at least two years of full-time study in their major discipline.

  4. Be enrolled as a student at their university during the program period (7 July – 29 August 2025).

  5. Possess a good command of English (knowledge of German is advantageous).

  6. Submit a letter of reference from a professor or supervisor who knows them well.

  7. Students from non-EU/EEA countries must obtain a working permit for Germany.

 

Application Procedure

1. Prepare Required Documents:

  • Academic CV (maximum 2 pages).

  • Certificate of enrollment valid until August 2025 (or the most current certificate).

  • Recent academic transcripts.

  • Copy of passport or ID card.

  • Letter of reference from an academic or professional contact.

  • For Students from Non-EU and Non-EEA countries need a working permission for Germany. Therefore, you will have to provide a Declaration of Certificate of Enrolment [Download form here]


2. Submit Your Application:

Complete the online application form in English or German by 5 January 2025.


ℹ️Note: Health insurance and accommodation are not provided, so participants must arrange these independently. Begin your search for housing early, as demand in Berlin is high.
