📚 Scholarship Overview

IHE Delft is recognised as the largest international graduate institute dedicated to water education and research, and has trained thousands of water professionals from more than 190 countries since its founding in 1957. The SIDS Scholarship is part of its Water and Development Partnership Programme, which specifically responds to the acute water management challenges facing small island nations — communities that are disproportionately exposed to climate change, sea-level rise, and freshwater scarcity despite contributing least to global emissions.

🧩 Programme Tracks

The MSc in Water and Sustainable Development offers two distinct pathways that scholars can pursue under the SIDS Scholarship:

Regular MSc (1 year / 68 ECTS) — designed for professionals seeking applied, practice-oriented expertise grounded in real-world water challenges. Its curriculum consists of common parts, thematic track modules and a thesis research part. The common parts — including an intro week, mixed weeks, and an interdisciplinary project — are the same for all students, while thematic track modules and MSc thesis research form a customised learning trajectory based on personal learning ambitions.

Research MSc (2 years / 120 ECTS) — designed to equip and prepare students for a career in research, academia, or to pursue a PhD.

Both programmes share the same thematic structure, organised into four interconnected areas. Within each area, students select a disciplinary profile from the following options:

  • Engineering and Hydrology

  • Governance and Management

  • Environment

  • Sanitation

  • Digital Innovation

The programme offers maximum flexibility to customise study trajectories to individual learning needs and career goals. Academic coaches support students in building their personalised programme and provide study guidance throughout.

The four broad thematic areas of the programme are:

  • Integrated, resilient, and inclusive land and water use

  • Knowledge and innovation for sustainable societies

  • Risks, adaptation, and resilience on coasts and in cities

  • Safe drinking water and sanitation

  • Sustainable freshwater resources and ecosystems

  • Water governance for justice, peace, and sustainability

SIDS-Specific Research Requirement: A defining feature of the scholarship — and one that sets it apart from standard MSc funding — is that scholars are required to conduct their thesis research in their home country or region, in direct association with one of the projects supported by the WDPP. Scholars must also actively participate in and contribute to the seminars organised by the programme's regional learning networks, ensuring that knowledge generated during study flows directly back to their communities.

🎁 Scholarship Benefits

The SIDS Scholarship offers either full or partial funding, depending on the applicant's individual circumstances:

Full Scholarship includes:

  • Full tuition fee coverage for the MSc programme

  • Health insurance for the complete duration of study

  • International travel costs (return flight between home country and the Netherlands)

  • Monthly living and accommodation allowance of €1,220 for the full study period

Partial Scholarship:

  • Available to candidates who can arrange co-funding from other sources — including personal means, employer support, or complementary scholarships

  • Candidates with partial funding from another source may apply for the remaining funds to top up their scholarship. Contact Ineke Melis at i.melis@un-ihe.org to discuss partial funding arrangements before applying

💡 Worth noting: Partial scholarships may also be available to support candidates who already have partial funding from sources such as employers, personal sponsorships, or complementary awards. If you have any funding secured, do not assume you are ineligible — reach out to the Fellowship and Admission Office directly.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the SIDS Scholarship, all of the following conditions must be met:

  • Be a national of one of the listed eligible SIDS countries

  • Be currently living and/or working in one of the eligible countries

  • Have received or be in the process of receiving academic admission to the regular or research variant of the MSc in Water and Sustainable Development at IHE Delft

  • Agree to conduct MSc research in the home country/region in association with a WDPP-supported project

  • Commit to active participation in the seminars of the programme's learning networks

  • Provide confirmation of intent to return to the country of origin or another WDPP priority country after completing the degree

  • Submit all English language test results before 1 June 2026

ℹ️ English language exemptions: Applicants from Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, and Saint Vincent & the Grenadines are exempt from submitting an English test score.

✅ Academic requirements: A Bachelor's degree in STEM, Social Sciences, Economics, or Law with a minimum of 60% aggregate. Exceptions may be considered for candidates below this threshold who have substantial proven professional experience in water-related fields. An IELTS score of 6.5 (or equivalent) is required for all non-exempt applicants.

💡 Selection Criteria

The scholarship selection process is competitive, and the following factors guide the final decision, listed in order of priority:

  • Strong priority is given to female candidates

  • Strength and clarity of motivation (applicants must answer 5 motivation questions in the online application)

  • Strong academic background

  • Preference for candidates with relevant professional experience in water management or related fields

  • Where candidates are equal in suitability and eligibility, priority is given to those who can arrange co-funding from other sources

📨 Employer Statement Requirement — A Critical Detail

One of the most important and often overlooked requirements of this scholarship is the employer letter. One of the two required recommendation letters must come from the applicant's current employer and must meet all of the following conditions:

  • Written on official organisational letterhead

  • Dated and signed by an authorised representative

  • Explains how the applicant's gained knowledge and skills will contribute to the organisation's activities and performance

  • Confirms that the applicant will return to the organisation after completing the MSc at IHE Delft

  • Indicates in which WDPP-funded project(s) the organisation is involved, if any

Failure to include an employer letter meeting these exact requirements means automatic disqualification from scholarship consideration, regardless of academic strength.

📝 Application Procedure

No separate scholarship application form is required. The scholarship consideration is fully integrated into the academic admissions process.

How to Apply — Step by Step:

  1. Apply for admission to the MSc Programme in Water and Sustainable Development at IHE Delft via the official admissions portal

  2. If you are a national of an eligible SIDS country and meet the eligibility criteria, you will automatically be considered for the scholarship once your academic admission letter has been issued

  3. Ensure your full application — including all supporting documents and English language test results — is submitted before 1 June 2026

  4. Scholarship decisions will be communicated on 1 July 2026

📁 Documents Required for the Admissions Application:

  • Completed online application form (via IHE Delft admissions portal)

  • Academic transcripts and Bachelor's degree certificate

  • Two recommendation letters — one of which must be the qualifying employer letter (see above)

  • Motivation statement (including answers to five specific motivation questions in the online form)

  • English language test results — IELTS 6.5 or equivalent (must be received by 1 June 2026)

  • Copy of passport

  • CV or professional résumé

⭐ Extra Tips for a Strong Application

  • Apply for admission as early as possible — the scholarship budget is limited and awards are made on a rolling basis once candidates are academically admitted

  • Begin the English language test registration process immediately if you have not yet taken it. Scores not received before 1 June 2026 will disqualify you from scholarship eligibility, even if you are otherwise a strong candidate

  • The employer letter is non-negotiable. Work with your employer in advance to ensure the letter meets all specified requirements before submission

  • If you have any partial funding from another source, contact the Fellowship and Admission Office proactively — having co-funding actually increases your priority in selection when candidates are otherwise equal

  • Candidates who are also eligible for the Rabbani Scholarship are advised to apply for that scholarship as well, as it can serve as a complementary funding source

  • Frame your motivation answers around the concrete water challenges your home country faces and how your specific professional role will allow you to apply your new skills after returning — specificity and personal grounding are critical
