Programme Overview

The KAS Scholarship Programme is open to international students and graduates intending to pursue postgraduate or doctoral studies in Germany. Applicants must commit to a minimum of four semesters of study and demonstrate strong academic performance, voluntary engagement, and a commitment to democratic values. Scholars come from diverse fields such as law, sciences, music, and medicine. Selection is regionally based, with upcoming selection meetings in India, Tanzania, and Colombia.

 

Scholarship Benefits

  • Master's students: €934 per month (up to 2 years)

  • PhD students: €1,400 per month (up to 3 years)

  • Health insurance subsidy: Up to €120 per month

  • Family allowance: €276 per month (if living with spouse in Germany)

  • Child allowance: €194 per month per child (subject to conditions)

  • Research stays abroad for PhD scholars (excluding conferences and symposia)

  • Tuition fee reimbursement for study-related courses (up to €1,500 per semester)

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Scholarship Programme, applicants must:

  1. Have completed a university degree (Bachelor's degree holders are not eligible)

  2. Demonstrate above-average academic performance

  3. Have at least B2-level proficiency in German

  4. Engage in voluntary work and have a strong commitment to democracy and human rights

  5. Plan to study in Germany for a minimum of four semesters

  6. Show motivation and personal development potential


Additional Restrictions:

  • Medical or pharmacy students can apply only after passing their intermediate exam in Germany

  • Specialist medical training or postdoctoral research stays in Germany are not eligible

  • Applicants with an existing doctoral degree are not eligible

 

Application Procedure

There are two application routes for the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Scholarship Programme :


1) Regional Selection:

Students from focus regions (e.g., India, Tanzania, Colombia) must apply via the respective KAS offices. If you are living in one of the eligible countries, you may send your written application directly to the responsible KAS office – please check their web-sites for the exact procedure and addressee.


2) Domestic Selection:

Students already in Germany apply via the KAS online portal by July 15.


Required Documents:

  • Completed application form

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) with details of voluntary work

  • Motivation letter

  • Academic certificates (with German translations if necessary)

  • Study performance records (if studying in Germany)

  • Proof of German language proficiency (B2 level)

  • Academic recommendation letter (from a professor or doctoral holder)

  • Personal recommendation letter (from a different referee)

  • University admission/matriculation certificate from a German university


For PhD applicants:

  • Research proposal (5-10 pages in German or English)

  • Additional academic recommendation letter (preferably from PhD supervisor)

  • Confirmation of supervision by doctoral advisor
