🎓 Scholarship Summary

  • Location: Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan (within BXAI’s AFLSP partner network across East Asia)

  • Host Institution: Kyoto University

  • Study Level: Master’s program, professional degrees, or the first year of a five-year doctoral program

  • Target Group: Young Asian scholars under 35 from specified countries/regions

  • Fields of Study: Any field available at Kyoto University graduate schools; emphasis on leadership and regional/global development

  • Value & Coverage:

    • Monthly stipend: approx. ¥150,000–¥220,000 (paid monthly, subject to enrollment confirmation and attendance)

To apply for the AFLSP at Kyoto University, applicants must be citizens of one of the following countries or regions in Asia:

  • East Asia: China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Korea, Mongolia

  • South Asia: India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives

  • Southeast Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, East Timor

  • Others: (Applicants holding multiple citizenships with Japan are not eligible)

📚 Program Overview

The AFLSP was launched by BXAI in 2014 to foster cross-cultural understanding and leadership development across Asia. Kyoto University is one of eight partner institutions. The AFLSP at Kyoto includes:

  • A two-year prestigious scholarship covering living costs, tuition, and admission

  • A professional enrichment program featuring:

    • Service Learning (immersive cultural trip within Japan)

    • Leadership Training workshops

    • Team-Project Based Research (T-PBR) in East Asia/international relations

    • Qualification Exams (Pre-QE and QE) with opportunities to present and be evaluated

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet all of the following:

  1. Demonstrate alignment with BXAI’s mission—strong integrity, intercultural interest, leadership potential, and regional/global mindset

  2. Citizenship from one of the eligible countries listed above, with “Student” residency status in Japan (Japanese dual citizens not eligible)

  3. Under 35 years old at time of application

  4. High English proficiency (TOEFL iBT ~90 or equivalent) and strong presentation skills

  5. Meet one of:

    • Have passed Kyoto University April 2026 entrance exam, or

    • Be enrolled in or have graduated from a designated university (in Asia), AND plan to take the entrance exam for April 2026 admission

  6. Plan to enroll as a full-time graduate student at Kyoto University from April 2026 and maintain enrollment during scholarship term

  7. Have a recommendation letter from a supervising professor or equivalent

  8. Never received AFLSP before

  9. Need financial support

  10. Be in sound health, with high moral standards and excellent academic record

  11. Not hold other third-party scholarships or funding

  12. Not hold paid employment (unless permitted) during scholarship

  13. Be able to participate in BXAI/KU scholar events and programs during scholarship

How to Apply:

  • Compile all documents in PDF (photos in JPEG) and submit as one ZIP file

  • Send to: AFLSP@mail2.adm.kyoto-u.ac.jp

  • Application Window: November 4–13, 2025, closes at 5:00 p.m. JST (no exceptions)

  • You’ll receive confirmation within ~2 business days; if not, follow up promptly

  13. China-specific verification documents (if graduated from designated Chinese universities)


📆 Selection & Timeline

  • Stage 1: Document screening — mid–late November 2025

  • Stage 2: Interviews by Kyoto University — early December 2025

  • Stage 3: Final interview with BXAI Leaders — date TBD

  • Final Notification: Late January 2026



💻 Participation Requirements

  • Participation in the BXAI Summer Program (3 weeks, summer after enrollment)

  • Active involvement in AFLSP@KU exchange events and international activities

  • Submission of periodic reports on studies and activities
