MFWA Next Generation Investigative Journalism Fellowship 2025

If you're a Ghanaian journalist passionate about uncovering financial malpractices and contributing to national development, the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) invites you to apply for the 2025 Next Generation Investigative Journalism (NGIJ) Fellowship. This fully funded, three-month residential program is designed to equip journalists with the skills and resources needed to investigate illicit financial flows (IFFs), tax justice, and domestic revenue mobilization.

🗒️ Fellowship Summary

  • Host Institution: Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA)

  • Study Level: Professional Development for Journalists

  • Target Group: Mid-career journalists with at least four years of experience and early-career journalists with a strong interest in investigative financial reporting

  • Fields of Focus: Investigative journalism, tax justice, domestic resource mobilization, illicit financial flows

  • Funding: Fully funded, including a monthly stipend

  • Duration: Three months (May–July 2025)

🎓 Fellowship Overview

The NGIJ Fellowship aims to strengthen the role of the media in promoting fiscal justice and accountability in Ghana. With support from Oxfam in Ghana, the program focuses on exposing how the country loses significant revenue through IFFs, which include tax evasion, corruption, illegal mining, and smuggling. By training journalists to investigate and report on these issues, the fellowship seeks to enhance public awareness and contribute to policy reforms.

🎁 Fellowship Benefits

  • Intensive Training: Hands-on mentorship and practical training with MFWA’s Fact-Check Ghana and The Fourth Estate.

  • Financial and Editorial Support: Assistance in producing at least two major investigative and fact-check reports.

  • Specialized Workshops: Training on progressive taxation, domestic resource mobilization, and illicit financial flows.

  • Certification: Certificate of Honour upon successful completion.

  • Stipend: Monthly financial support during the program.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for Generation Investigative Journalism (NGIJ) Fellowship, Applicants must:

  1. Be Ghanaian journalists.

  2. Have at least four years of experience (for mid-career applicants) or demonstrate a strong passion for investigative financial reporting (for early-career applicants).

  3. Commit to full participation in the residential program from May to July 2025.

  4. Women and journalists from regions outside Greater Accra are strongly encouraged to apply.

  1. Motivation Letter: A maximum of 250 words explaining your interest in the fellowship.

  2. Published Articles: Two news articles you've authored (print, TV, radio, or online).

  3. Employer Consent Letter: For staff journalists, a letter of consent from your employer.

  4. Curriculum Vitae (CV): Including contact information for two referees.
