📚 Scholarship Overview
The Spärck AI Scholarships, named after pioneering British computer scientist Karen Sparck Jones, provide full funding for master's degrees at nine leading UK universities specialising in artificial intelligence and STEM subjects. The programme is backed by £17.2 million in government funding and delivers on a key recommendation of the AI Opportunities Action Plan.
Set to rival globally recognised fellowships such as the Rhodes, Marshall, and Fulbright scholarships, at least 100 talented master's level students from the UK and abroad will receive unparalleled access to industry partnerships, work placements, and mentorship opportunities — including in the UK's AI Security Institute and leading tech firms such as Darktrace, Faculty, and Quantexa.
The University of Bristol holds a particularly distinguished place within this consortium. As AI University of the Year and the proud host of the UK's most powerful supercomputer — the £225 million Isambard-AI facility — Bristol is thrilled to support this scholarship as an anchor partner, relishing the opportunity to shape the next generation of global AI pioneers.
The four eligible MSc programmes launching at Bristol for the 2026/27 academic year provide technical foundations in modern AI while fostering a critical understanding of its limitations, societal and environmental impact, and ethical challenges — contributing to the University's growing reputation as a destination for cutting-edge, interdisciplinary AI research, education, and innovation.
🧩 Programme Structure
The Spärck AI Scholarship is not a standalone bursary — it embeds scholars into a nationally coordinated programme of development, community, and professional engagement.
Academic Study (September 2026 onward)
Scholars pursue one of four eligible full-time MSc programmes at the University of Bristol:
MSc Artificial Intelligence
MSc Artificial Intelligence for Business
MSc Engineering with Artificial Intelligence
MSc Artificial Intelligence for Medicine and Health
Each programme is new for the 2026/27 academic year, purpose-built to equip graduates with both advanced technical skills and a grounded understanding of AI's real-world implications — from healthcare and engineering to business transformation.
Cohort Activities and Networking
Beyond formal study, scholars gain access to a structured calendar of activities and events connecting them with AI professionals, fellow scholars across all nine partner universities, and key figures from industry and government. Scholars are expected to attend the national in-person Sparck AI Launch Event in Manchester on 9 and 10 September 2026, with reasonable travel costs provided.
Work Placement Opportunity
Scholars have the opportunity to apply for a work placement at an AI-related organisation. Industry partners signed up to the programme include PolyAI, Quantexa, CausaLens, Flok, Beamery, Darktrace, and Faculty — organisations at the leading edge of applied AI in the UK.
🎁 Scholarship Benefits
Full tuition fee waiver for the one-year MSc programme
Tax-free annual stipend (UKRI minimum — approximately £20,780; final rate to be confirmed in Spring 2026)
Access to a structured programme of cohort activities and AI-sector events
Opportunity to apply for AI-focused work placements with leading industry partners
Travel support for the national Sparck AI Launch Event (Manchester, September 2026)
Membership in a prestigious government-backed national cohort of future AI leaders
ℹ️ Important: You can only hold one form of UK government funding. If you are applying to multiple government-funded scholarship or bursary schemes simultaneously, you may only accept one award.
✅ Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the Spaäck AI Scholarship at the University of Bristol, applicants must:
Have already applied for full-time study on one of the four eligible MSc programmes above, starting September 2026
Be applying for only one Sparck AI Scholarship, even if they have applied to multiple master's programmes or universities
Be available to begin study in September 2026 — the scholarship cannot be deferred
Both UK (home) and international students are eligible to apply.
The University of Bristol actively seeks candidates from a broad range of backgrounds, and particular consideration is given to applicants from groups currently underrepresented in the AI sector. If applicable, candidates are encouraged to provide a statement about their circumstances, including whether they:
Are British and from Black or marginalised ethnically minoritised groups
Are care-experienced
Identify as a woman
Come from a low-income background
Are disabled, including those with sensory or mobility impairments, long-term mental health conditions, autism, long-term illnesses, or Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs)
Are a first-generation student (parents or carers did not attend university)
Attended schools or colleges with below-national-average performance
📝 Application Procedure
The scholarship application is a separate process from the university admissions application. Acceptance to a programme does not guarantee a scholarship, and vice versa. Both processes must be completed independently.
Step 1 — Apply for University Admission
Submit a full admission application to the University of Bristol for one of the four eligible MSc programmes starting September 2026. You must have already applied before you can be considered for the scholarship.
Step 2 — Complete the Scholarship Application Form
The application form must include a personal statement addressing each of the following core attributes, each within 4,000 characters:
Motivation for being part of a government-funded cohort-based scholarship and how you will make the most of the opportunity
Vision and curiosity, including a desire to expand knowledge of AI and explore ideas beyond your immediate discipline
Critical thinking and problem-solving
Adaptability
Communication and collaboration
Leadership and entrepreneurial mindset
In addition, applicants must write an essay (up to 4,000 characters) responding to the following topic:
"What opportunities do you see AI presenting in the field you aim to study through your master's course?"
Candidates from underrepresented groups should also include a supporting statement about their circumstances as outlined in the eligibility section above. Prepare all answers before accessing the online form.
Step 3 — Reference Letter
Applicants must arrange for a reference letter from someone who knows their academic or professional work and can endorse their suitability for the scholarship — for example, a university tutor or workplace manager. The referee must submit the reference letter form by the deadline. Applicants should contact their chosen referee well in advance.
Step 4 — Shortlisting and Interview
Once applications are reviewed, shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview.
Step 5 — Scholarship Offer
Scholarship offers will be sent on 15 June 2026. Successful applicants must accept by 1 July 2026.
Submission Deadline: 15 April 2026 at 23:59 UK time — no late applications accepted.
Note: If you are waiting on a scholarship decision and need extra time to pay your university application deposit, you may request a deposit deadline extension via the PGT deposit deadline extension request form.
