TAGDev 2.0 Scholarship Programme at Egerton University Overview

The Transforming African Agricultural Universities to Meaningfully Contribute to Africa’s Growth and Development (TAGDev 2.0) Programme is a 10-year initiative (2023-2033) implemented by RUFORUM in partnership with Mastercard Foundation. It aims to strengthen agricultural universities and TVET institutions by equipping students with entrepreneurial and technical skills to drive inclusive, equitable, and climate-resilient transformation of Africa’s agriculture and agrifood systems.


The programme supports both undergraduate and postgraduate students by providing financial aid and leadership development, ensuring that scholars actively contribute to community transformation and agricultural development.

 

Available Study Programmes

At Egerton University, the scholarship is open to students applying for:

1. Undergraduate Programmes:

  • Bachelor of Science in Community Development

  • Bachelor of Agribusiness Management

  • Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology


2. Postgraduate Programmes:

  • Master of Science in Animal Nutrition

  • Master of Science in Soil Science

  • Master of Science in Agricultural Engineering


Scholars will have access to industry internships, research opportunities, and community engagement initiatives designed to strengthen their practical knowledge and entrepreneurial skills.


 

Benefits and Coverage

The TAGDev 2.0 Scholarship is a full-board scholarship covering:

  1. Tuition Fees: Fully paid for the duration of study

  2. Accommodation: On-campus housing provided

  3. Living Expenses: Monthly stipend for meals and personal expenses

  4. Research Costs: Financial support for field studies and research projects

  5. Workshops & Conferences: Funding for participation in relevant academic and professional events

  6. Laptop: Scholars will receive a laptop for academic and research use

  7. Internship & Field Attachments: Support for industrial and community-based learning experiences

  8. Entrepreneurship Training: Capacity-building sessions on agribusiness and value-chain development

  9. Travel & Transport: Assistance for relocation and field research


Additional Support for Special Groups:

  • Refugees will receive support for travel documents

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the TAGDev 2.0 Scholarship, Applicants must meet the following conditions:

  1. Be nationals of Kenya or East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan)

  2. Be from an economically disadvantaged background (marginalized communities, refugees, displaced persons, or persons with disabilities)

  3. Be less than 30 years old for undergraduate and less than 35 years old for Master’s studies at the time of application

  4. Have completed secondary school or diploma studies between 2021 and 2024 for undergraduate applicants

  5. Meet the academic admission requirements of Egerton University

  6. Demonstrate interest in agriculture, agribusiness, and entrepreneurship

  7. Exhibit leadership potential and commitment to community transformation


Note: Applicants already benefiting from another scholarship are not eligible. Former TAGDev beneficiaries cannot reapply.

 

Application Procedure

Step 1: Apply for Admission to Egerton University

Download and complete the Egerton University admission form from Egerton University’s below.


Submit completed forms and supporting documents via email to mcf.chs@egerton.ac.ke or deliver hard copies to:

Required Documents for Admission:

  • Certified copies of academic certificates, transcripts, and high school result slips

  • Copy of National ID or Passport (Refugees must provide proof of status)

  • A passport-sized photo

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) (for Master’s applicants)



Step 2: Apply for the TAGDev 2.0 Scholarship

Register and apply via RUFORUM’s Information Management System (RIMS) and Submit the required documents, including:

  • Completed TAGDev 2.0 Scholarship Application Form (Download & print from after applying online in step two)

  • Academic certificates and transcripts

  • Personal statement detailing leadership experience and motivation for applying

  • Recommendation letters (from teachers, community leaders, or employers)


Selection Process

  • Application Deadline: April 1, 2025

  • Shortlisting & Interviews: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews

  • Final Selection: Scholarship offers will be awarded based on academic merit, leadership potential, and financial need


Additional Information

  • Scholars must maintain a GPA of B (or equivalent) to continue receiving funding

  • Retaking more than four courses will result in withdrawal of the scholarship

  • Successful applicants are expected to be actively involved in community service and outreach projects

  • Alumni will remain part of the TAGDev 2.0 network and RUFORUM’s professional community
