The Commonwealth Peace Prize 2025 | £50,000 Award

The Commonwealth Peace Prize is an esteemed award that recognizes distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions to peacebuilding through faith-based engagement in conflict resolution, the promotion of social cohesion, and the establishment of sustainable peace. Organized and delivered by the Khalili Foundation in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat, this prize is an integral part of the Commonwealth Faith Festival and the Faith in the Commonwealth Initiative. Here are the details.

 

Prize Aims

The Commonwealth Peace Prize aims to:

  • Build capacity and amplify awareness about impactful youth-led and intergenerational partnerships promoting peace across diverse geographical, cultural, religious, and ethnic groups within the Commonwealth.

  • Promote dialogue and innovative peacebuilding methods to support greater harmony and understanding across Commonwealth nations.

 

Award Value

The value of the Commonwealth Peace Prize includes a financial award of £50,000. This amount is intended to support the winner in continuing their peacebuilding work. Additionally, the winner will receive a citation and a letter of award, recognizing their significant contributions to peacebuilding and promoting social cohesion within the Commonwealth.

 

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Commonwealth Peace Prize, the candidate must meet the following criteria:

1. Individual Eligibility: Institutions are not eligible to receive the Prize. The winner will be a living, distinguished, and long-serving individual who is a Commonwealth citizen over the age of 30.


2. Peacebuilding Track Record: The individual must be considered a respected and trusted broker between conflicting parties, with a strong and lengthy track record of successful peacebuilding in Commonwealth societies.


3. Sustainable Peace Efforts:

The candidate must have built sustainable mechanisms, institutions, or processes for dialogue that have contributed to a definitive end to conflict, lasting peace, social cohesion, or other observed positive changes.


4. Promotion of Commonwealth Values: The individual must consistently use their significant influence to promote Commonwealth values such as tolerance, respect, understanding, moderation, and celebration of cultural, racial, ethnic diversity, and religious freedom.


5. Use of Faith Principles: The candidate must use principles of religious faith and/or faith in the Commonwealth Charter to create positive and sustainable peace towards free and democratic societies and inclusive development.

 

Nomination Requirements

• Nomination Deadline: 17 January 2025.


• Official Nominations: Only member governments, through their High Commissions in London or non-resident High Commissioners or accredited officials to the Commonwealth, and Heads of Commonwealth Accredited Organisations are eligible to submit official nominations.


• Submission Process

Nominations must be submitted as an official letter of recommendation, including an impact biography of the candidate, outlining how the candidate meets all the specified criteria. Nominations must be sent to the Commonwealth Secretariat by email to PeacePrize@commonwealth.int and must be received by 23:59 GMT on 17 January 2025.

 

Selection and Awards Process

  • Shortlisting: A Commonwealth Peace Prize Committee under the banner of the Commonwealth Faith Festival project will prepare the first shortlist for consideration by a panel of judges.

  • Panel Selection: A high-level panel of judges will select a winner in February 2025.

  • Announcement and Ceremony: The Secretary-General will announce the winner during Commonwealth Week in 2025 at a special ceremony.

  • Value:The winner will be presented with a citation and a letter of award outlining a financial award of £50,000 to continue their peacebuilding work.

  • Shortlist Participation: The final shortlist of candidates will not be published. However, candidates from the shortlist may be invited to participate in Commonwealth Faith Festival activities.
