🧭 Fellowship Overview

The Hertz Fellowship is more than just funding:

  • It is awarded through a rigorous merit-based selection process refined over many decades.

  • Selection criteria include: deep, integrated knowledge, creative problem solving, commitment to greater good, active leadership, and a history of achievement.

  • Fellows are required (non-binding) to make a moral commitment to make their skills available to the U.S. in times of national emergency. This is not a legal contract.

  • There are regular information sessions to help applicants understand best practices for applying. For the 2026 cycle, sessions were scheduled for September 10 & 16, 2025.

  • Timeline for the 2026 application includes: application opens August 28, 2025; deadline October 31, 2025; references due November 3; preselection mid-November; interviews in Dec/Jan and Feb; finalists notified around February, and award announcements in April/May 2026.

💡 Extra Information

  • The fellowship requires you to commit morally (non-binding) to making your skills available to the U.S. during national emergencies. This reflects the foundation’s belief in science & technology serving public good.

  • There is a list of participating schools (over 50) that have agreements with Hertz so that stipend, tuition etc. are coordinated. If your institution is not on the list, Hertz may negotiate. (See in FAQ section)

  • If you are a finalist but not selected, there are partnerships (e.g. Case Western Reserve, Texas A&M) that may offer full financial benefits to finalists.

  • Given the competitiveness, strong recommendation letters, well-defined research plan, evidence of leadership and impact, and a clear narrative of how your work addresses societal challenges are very important.
