📰 Fellowship Overview
The NYT Fellowship evolved from the newsroom’s previous summer internship model (which it replaced in 2019) to a more immersive, yearlong development program. Fellows are assigned real newsroom roles across departments — from reporting and editing to visual, multimedia, audio, graphics, opinion, audience, and design.
Throughout the year, the program includes:
Mentorship and editorial feedback from senior Times editors
A writing coach (or equivalent) who works one-on-one with fellows on story development, structure, clarity, and reportage across formats (text, visual, audio, etc.)
Training sessions, speaker series, workshops — fellows meet newsroom leaders and guest experts
Rotation or exposure across newsroom desks or projects (depending on role and assignment)
Hybrid working setup: a mix of in-person and remote work, though regular office attendance is required per desk guidance
While fellows do the same work as full-time Times staffers in their roles, the program also aims to build connections, strengthen journalistic networks, and help alumni transition into roles across the industry.
Because NYT’s bar for staff hiring out of the fellowship is high, only a minority of fellows remain at the Times immediately afterward.
🎁 Benefits & Coverage
Full-time salary + employment benefits (healthcare, etc.)
Parental leave / partner leave: some sources list ~18 weeks paid leave (maternity) and ~10 weeks partner leave.
Access to training, mentorship, speaker events, and coaching support

🔍 Tips & Insights for a Strong Application
Show diversity of skills: Because NYT uses many desks (reporting, visuals, audio, audience, opinion), demonstrating experience or aptitude beyond just text writing helps.
Strong portfolio / clips matter: Original, well-reported work, even at smaller outlets or local levels, can stand out more than polished but superficial pieces.
Show your voice & perspective: Use the cover letter to tell your story, your motivations, your background, what you bring uniquely.
Pitch ideas: Even early in your career, offering story ideas or demonstrating initiative can distinguish you.
Know NYT’s journalism values: Read their stories, follow their standards, show awareness of rigorous, source-based reporting.
Meet deadlines & follow instructions: In a competitive program, failure to adhere to application guidelines may disqualify.
Visa and eligibility clarity: Be transparent about your authorization to work; if you're not in the U.S. or U.K., check whether your status (OPT, etc.) is acceptable.
Understand the timeline: Prepare ahead — compiling clips, gathering references, drafting your statement takes time.
Reach out for feedback: Before submission, get peers, mentors, professors to read your materials and critique.
