The White House Fellows Leadership and Public Service program is a prestigious initiative established by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964, provides exceptional emerging leaders with the unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience in the Federal government. This program is recognized as one of the most prestigious in the United States for leadership and public service. It aims to foster a sense of personal involvement in national governance and leadership.
Program Overview
White House Fellows spend a year working as full-time, paid fellows alongside senior White House staff, Cabinet Secretaries, and other top-ranking government officials. The program includes an educational component, featuring roundtable discussions with leaders from the private and public sectors, and trips to study U.S. policy domestically and internationally. Fellowships are strictly non-partisan, ensuring a balanced and diverse experience.
Mission and Purpose
The mission, outlined by the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships, is to provide gifted and highly motivated leaders with experience in governing the Nation. The program aims to create leaders who understand the challenges of national governance and can engage the public in comprehending the processes of government. This non-partisan program has been maintained through both Republican and Democratic administrations, enriching public policy practice over decades.

The program boasts a distinguished list of alumni, including historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and General Colin Powell. Within the Biden Administration, former Fellows include Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security John Tien, and others.
Eligibility Requirements
Citizenship: Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
Education: Completion of undergraduate education is required.
Federal Employment: Federal employees are generally ineligible, except for career military personnel.
