🧠 Award Overview

The TWAS-Apex Award is presented to an individual scientist from the developing world who has demonstrated excellence in advancing the field of Quantum Science and Technology through original, high-impact research or the development of innovative applications. The award aims to promote both theoretical and experimental contributions that push the boundaries of fundamental knowledge and foster the translation of quantum principles into practical technologies. The recipient will be invited to present their work at TWAS’s 17th General Conference in Rio de Janeiro.

  • Monetary prize of USD 100,000

  • A medal and a certificate recognizing the recipient's significant contributions

  • Invitation to present at the 17th TWAS General Conference

✅ Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a national of a developing country

  • Must have lived and worked in a developing country for at least the past 10 years

  • Cannot have previously received the Trieste Science Prize, TWAS-Lenovo Science Award, or other prestigious international awards with a monetary value equivalent to or greater than the TWAS-Apex Award

  • Self-nominations and nominations from jury members are not accepted

  • Fellows of TWAS are eligible

📝 Application Procedure

Nominations must be submitted electronically through the online platform by May 15, 2025. Nominations are invited from TWAS members, selected individuals, as well as from science academies, national research councils, universities, and scientific institutions. Nominations of women scientists are particularly encouraged.


A complete nomination includes:

  • Nominator and nominee contact details

  • Brief suggested citation (no more than 20 words) highlighting the nominee's outstanding scientific achievement

  • Supporting statement (~200 words) summarizing the nominee's scientific achievements

  • 5-6 page narrative write-up of the candidate highlighting major scientific achievements

  • Information on PhD (degree, year, awarding institution)

  • Details of any time spent abroad in the past ten years

  • Nominee's brief CV

  • List of up to 20 significant publications and a complete list of publications

  • Information on previous awards, honors, and recognition

  • Google Scholar h-index and number of citations

  • Authorization from the nominee to process personal data in conformity with Art. 13 of the Italian Legislative Decree 196/2003
