TWAS-CAS Grants 2025: Advancing Global Sustainability Science Collaboration

The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), in partnership with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the CAS-TWAS Network for Sustainable Development, invites applications for the 2025 cycle of the TWAS-CAS Grants for Cooperation on Sustainability Science. This initiative aims to foster international collaboration among TWAS Members and Young Affiliates through joint research projects aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

🌍 Programme Overview

  • Host Institutions: TWAS and CAS-TWAS Centres of Excellence

  • Funding Amount: RMB 600,000 per project (approximately USD 83,000), disbursed over two years

  • Project Duration: 2 years

  • Application Deadlines:

    • Initial Submission: 14 June 2025

    • Final Submission: 1 September 2025

  • Eligibility: Open to TWAS Members and TWAS Young Affiliates; lead scientists must not be based in China

  • Fields of Study: Sustainability Science, encompassing areas such as green technology, biotechnology, climate and environmental sciences, water and environment, emerging infectious diseases, and space technology for disaster mitigation

🔬 Research Focus Areas and Contact Points

Applicants are encouraged to collaborate with one of the following CAS-TWAS Centres of Excellence:

  1. Green Technology (CEGT): Research on efficient and selective CO₂ transformation mechanisms and technologies.

  2. Biotechnology (CoEBio): Bio-utilization mechanisms and key technologies for renewable energy.

  3. Climate and Environment Sciences (ICCES): Understanding and predicting climate extremes and their impacts using innovative techniques for disaster preparedness and sustainable development.

  4. Water and Environment (CEWE): Addressing water and environmental issues in sustainable development.

  5. Emerging Infectious Diseases (CEEID): Prevention and control of tropical infectious diseases and pathogens with pandemic potential.

  6. Space Technology for Disaster Mitigation (SDIM): Climate-driven flood hazard modeling and critical infrastructure exposure analysis.

📝 Application Process

  1. Initial Contact: Interested TWAS Members or Young Affiliates should send their CV and a detailed research proposal to the contact person of the chosen Centre of Excellence by 14 June 2025.

  2. Proposal Development: Selected candidates will collaborate with the Centre to develop a comprehensive research proposal and budget plan.

  3. Final Submission: The complete application, including the CAS-TWAS application form, should be submitted to programmes@twas.org and dywang@cashq.ac.cn by 1 September 2025.(Scholarships.af)
