If you are a Canadian citizen with roots in Africville or a passion for preserving its legacy, the Africville Heritage Trust (AHT) Society Scholarship Awards Program 2025 is now open for applications. Established in 2013 through a partnership between the AHT and Waterbury Newton Law Firm, this program honors the community's history and supports students pursuing higher education in Canada.

🎓 Scholarship Summary

  • Location: Canada (scholarships applicable at accredited Canadian post-secondary institutions)

  • Host Institution: Africville Heritage Trust Society

  • Study Level: High School, Undergraduate, Graduate, Postgraduate

  • Target Group: Former Africville residents, descendants, and individuals advancing Africville's legacy

  • Fields of Study: All fields of post-secondary study

  • Award Value: Up to five (5) scholarships totaling $5,000 annually

  • Award Duration: One-time award per recipient

  • Start Date: Funds disbursed on or before August 31, 2025

🏛️ Scholarship Overview

The AHT Scholarship Program is designed to provide financial assistance to individuals connected to Africville or those actively contributing to its legacy. The program is administered by the AHT Scholarship Committee and reviewed by a jury comprising the AHT Executive Director, a board member, a Waterbury Newton representative, and two community members. Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, community involvement, and alignment with the AHT's mission.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Mandatory:

  • Canadian citizen.

  • Former Africville resident or descendant.

  • Graduating high school student, mature student entering post-secondary education, or current post-secondary student returning the following year.

  • Not an employee or board member of the AHT, or an immediate family member of a Scholarship Committee member.


Additional Considerations:

  • Participation in extracurricular activities.

  • Honors or awards received.

  • Work experience.

  • Academic achievement (minimum 75% average).

  • Personal or family circumstances, such as financial need.

  • References.

📝 Application Procedure

Application Deadline: June 30, 2025


Required Documents:

  1. Completed scholarship application form.

  2. Proof of Canadian citizenship (e.g., birth certificate).

  3. Documentation of Africville residency or lineage.

  4. Three references (non-relatives).

  5. Proof of acceptance or enrollment in a Canadian accredited post-secondary institution.

  6. Personal statement addressing the application criteria.

  7. Official transcripts from current or most recent studies.
