📘 Fellowship Overview

The AIG Visiting Fellowship is awarded on an ad-hoc basis to outstanding public servants who have made significant contributions to the development of the public sector and whose work is aligned with the Foundation's strategic objectives. Fellows undertake a period of study, reflection, and engagement of up to six months with scholars and students at the University of Oxford's Blavatnik School of Government. Since its inception, the fellowship has welcomed a distinguished line of alumni including former INEC Chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega, former FIRS Executive Chairman Mrs. Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru, and most recently ASCON Director-General Mrs. Funke Adepoju (2025 Fellow).


🧩 Structure & Activities

During their time at the University of Oxford, fellows engage in a structured yet flexible learning experience that allows them to explore critical governance issues in depth. The programme enables participants to examine real-world policy challenges facing Nigeria, with exposure ensuring that fellows return with both theoretical insights and actionable strategies that can be applied within their respective institutions.

The fellowship experience is built around four core pillars:

1. Academic Immersion

Fellows engage with Oxford's world-class faculty, researchers, and student community, accessing cutting-edge policy research and governance frameworks at the Blavatnik School — consistently ranked among the world's best schools of public policy.


2. Policy Development

Fellows use their time at the school to further develop their understanding of specific policy issues and solutions and to reflect on practices in other countries. Each fellow focuses on a reform challenge directly relevant to their institutional mandate back home.


3. Knowledge Codification

✅ Eligibility Criteria

This fellowship is highly selective and targets proven leaders, not emerging talents. Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

Position & Level

  • Must hold a leadership position at the level of Director General or Chief Executive Officer in the Nigerian public service

Service Longevity

  • Must have a minimum of six years remaining before mandatory retirement age

Demonstrated Leadership

  • Must show measurable, quantifiable impact in public service delivery within the past five years

  • Must provide evidence of successfully implementing reforms or improvements in their area of responsibility

Strategic Influence

  • Must oversee strategic initiatives in at least one key sector: Health, Education, Agriculture, Finance, Energy, Justice, Defence, or Security

  • Must demonstrate experience in cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder management

Educational Qualification

  • Minimum of a Master's degree or equivalent professional qualification

  • Evidence of continuous professional development within the last three years

Organisational Endorsement

  • Must obtain formal endorsement from a respected public sector leader (Head of Civil Service, Minister, Governor, or equivalent)

Ethical Standing

  • No pending disciplinary actions

  • Clean and outstanding record of service

  • Must pass security clearance
