🎓 Scholarship Summary

  • Location: United Kingdom

  • Host Institution: UK universities participating under the CSC scheme

🌍 Eligible Countries

Eligibility is limited to graduates from specific Commonwealth countries, typically those classified as least-developed or vulnerable. The current list includes:


Bangladesh, Cameroon, Gambia, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, Zambia 


💰 Benefits

Financial Coverage

  • Tuition Fees: Fully paid by CSC and host institution

  • Airfare: Return flights from home country to the UK, and back at end of award. Includes paid mid-term visit unless spouse/child allowances or fieldwork airfare claimed

  • Monthly Stipend:

    • £1,347/month (standard UK universities)

    • £1,652–£1,690/month in London metropolitan area

  • Warm Clothing Allowance: Available where applicable

  • Study Travel Grant: Covers study-related travel costs within the UK or abroad

  • Fieldwork Costs: One economy-class return flight for approved overseas research visits

  • Family Allowances (contributions):

    • Spouse: ~£290–£313/month for up to 9 months

    • Child allowance: ~£290–£622 for first child; ~£143–£154 for 2nd & 3rd children (under 16)

    • Single, widowed/divorced parents: higher child allowance (e.g. ~£576.61 for first child)

  • Disability Support: Needs-based assessment and potential financial support


Additional Support

  • Healthcare: Scholars eligible for NHS access under UK regulations (mentioned generally in Commonwealth scholarships context)

✅ Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, applicants must:

  1. Be a citizen or refugee from an eligible Commonwealth country, and a permanent resident in that country

  2. Be available to start studies in the UK by September/October 2026

  3. Hold, by the start date, an upper second-class (2:1) first degree, or a lower second-class degree plus relevant postgraduate qualification (e.g., master’s)

  4. Not be registered for a PhD or MPhil leading to PhD in the UK or home country before start of scholarship

  5. Demonstrate financial need—unable to afford UK study without the scholarship

  6. Submit all required supporting documents in the specified format

Note: Applicants with disabilities who don't meet the 2:1 requirement may be considered via the Commonwealth Disabled People’s Forum (CDPF) nominator


📝 Application Procedure

  • Application Route: Through national nominating agencies (primary), selected universities (for academic staff), or recognized NGOs; direct applications to CSC are not accepted

  • Nomination Deadline: Agencies submit nominated candidates to CSC by December 2025 (deadlines vary)

  • Supporting Documents typically include:

    • Passport or ID (proof of citizenship/refugee status)

    • Academic transcripts (with certified translations if needed)

    • Two or more reference letters (PDF, signed, on official letterhead or via institutional email)

    • Supervisor support letter from UK institution (same format)

    • Development Impact Statement, study plan, personal statement, CV, publications, 5-year career plan (as per CSC guidelines)



📝 Completing the application form

In the application form, applicants are asked to:

  • List all undergraduate and postgraduate university qualifications obtained.

  • List up to 10 publications and prizes.

  • Provide details of employment history and explain how the experience gained supports and is relevant to the programme to be undertaken in the UK.

  • List names and positions of three referees who are qualified to comment on both their capacity to benefit from the proposed Scholarship in the UK and their ability to deliver development impact afterwards. One of the referees must be a current employer (if applicable) and at least two references must be included with the application.

  • Provide a Development Impact statement in four parts.

In the first part applicants should explain how the proposed scholarship relates to:

  1. Development issues at the global, national, and local level

  2. Development issues connected to the chosen CSC development theme and the wider sector


The second part should explain how they intend to apply their new skills once the Scholarship ends.


The third part should outline what they expect will change in development terms following the Scholarship, including:

  1. The outcomes that they aim to achieve

  2. The timeframe for their implementation

  3. Who the beneficiaries will be


In the fourth part applicants should write about how the impact of their work could be best measured and evidenced.



Applicants are also asked to:

  • Confirm what their award objectives are and how each of them will be met by the Scholarship programme.

  • Confirm what their career plans are for the 5 years following the Scholarship.

  • Confirm their long-term career plans.

  • Provide a detailed plan of study.

  • Provide a personal statement to summarise the ways in which their personal background has encouraged them to want to make an impact in their home country. Applicants may wish to highlight any areas where they have already made significant contributions, including overcoming personal or community barriers in accessing higher education or within their field.

  • Summarise the ways in which they have engaged in voluntary activities and the opportunities they have had to demonstrate leadership.
