MOFA Taiwan Fellowship 2025–2026

If you are an academic expert, doctoral candidate, or researcher passionate about Taiwan, cross-strait relations, or Sinology, the MOFA Taiwan Fellowship offers an exceptional opportunity to pursue your research in one of Asia’s most dynamic academic environments. Applications for the 2025–2026 cycle are now open. This fully funded fellowship allows scholars to conduct advanced research at Taiwan’s top universities and academic institutions with generous financial and institutional support.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Taiwan launched this initiative to strengthen scholarly exchange and enhance global understanding of Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific region. With over 1,500 fellows from 93 countries awarded since its inception, the program continues to attract world-class researchers in fields related to international relations, political science, history, and area studies.

🎓 Fellowship Overview

The MOFA Taiwan Fellowship supports scholars conducting research in fields that deepen international understanding of Taiwan's role in regional and global affairs. Research topics may include but are not limited to Taiwan’s diplomacy, geopolitics in East Asia, cross-strait relations, democratic development, and Chinese studies (Sinology).

Fellows are hosted at leading academic institutions across Taiwan and receive administrative support from the Center for Chinese Studies (CCS) at the National Central Library in Taipei.

🎁 Fellowship Benefits

  • Monthly Grant:

    • NT$60,000 for professors, associate professors, and senior researchers

    • NT$50,000 for assistant professors, postdocs, and doctoral candidates

  • Travel Support: One round-trip, economy-class airfare from your home country to Taiwan

  • Insurance: Accident and medical insurance up to NT$1 million

  • Duration: Minimum 3 months to a maximum of 12 months

  • Research Access: Support in securing affiliation with local universities or research institutes

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be:

  • Foreign nationals who are professors, associate/assistant professors, postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, or doctoral program students.

  • Scholars affiliated with overseas academic institutions.

  • Individuals recommended by Taiwan's overseas embassies with research focusing on Taiwan’s foreign relations or cross-strait relations.

  • Not currently holding or applying for another Taiwan-based research fellowship for the same project.

📝 Application Procedure

Step 1: Prepare Required Documents

  • Resume with a list of publications

  • Research proposal

  • Two letters of recommendation, OR one letter of recommendation and one letter of agreement from the applicant’s department head


Step 2: Online Application


Step 3: Submit Hard Copy


Step 4: Selection

  • MOFA and affiliated institutions will assess submissions with input from ROC overseas offices.


Step 5: Secure Host Institution

  • Applicants must obtain a letter of consent from a Taiwanese university or research center willing to host their research.


Step 6: Submit Consent Letter


Step 7: Grant Authorization

  • Successful candidates will receive a Grant Authorization Letter, officially confirming the fellowship.


Step 8: Visa and Arrival

  • Apply for an “FR” visa using the authorization letter and begin your research in Taiwan in 2026.
