Programme Overview
The SANDEE Summer School is an intensive residential program designed to equip economists with the skills necessary to teach and conduct research in environmental and natural resource economics. The curriculum covers a range of topics, including:
Economic issues underlying sustainable development
Biodiversity
Energy
Externalities and market failure
Policy instruments
Non-market valuation
Impact evaluation
Poverty–environment interactions
Natural resource use and pollution management
Participants will engage in theoretical discussions and hands-on computer lab sessions to analyze environmental problems pertinent to developing countries.
Funding and Coverage
SANDEE offers three types of funding for participants:
Fully Funded: Covers course materials, international travel, meals, and accommodation during the Summer School, valued at approximately USD 4,500.
Partially Funded: SANDEE covers accommodation and meals; participants are responsible for travel-related expenses.
Self-Funded: Participants bear all expenses, including travel, accommodation, meals, and visas.
All participants, regardless of funding type, must pay a non-refundable registration fee of USD 250 upon acceptance.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should meet the following criteria to be considered for SANDEE Summer School:
Hold a master's degree (with relevant work experience) or a PhD in economics.
Possess a solid understanding of microeconomics, calculus, and basic econometrics.
Be a junior to mid-career faculty member or researcher.
Reside and work within the HKH/South Asia region.
Priority is given to qualified female faculty members and researchers who have submitted a research proposal to SANDEE on environmental and resource economics topics.
Applicants who have previously received training in environmental and resource economics or are planning to pursue higher education abroad soon are not eligible.
Application Procedure
Interested candidates must apply online by 23 March 2025. The application should include the following documents, combined into a single PDF file not exceeding four pages (one-inch margins, 12-point font):
Cover Letter (one page): Detailing how the course will benefit your teaching and research activities, prior background in environmental economics, mathematical and computing skills, and any nominations.
Research Concept Note (two pages): Discussing the research problem, policy relevance, research gaps, questions, analytical framework, literature review, empirical methods, and expected outcomes.
Curriculum Vitae (one page): Including age, gender, professional responsibilities, affiliation, educational qualifications, key research publications, and current teaching responsibilities.
