The Nkafu Policy Institute of the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation is organizing a two-day intensive training course on scientific writing and publication in, aiming to improve the scientific writing and publishing skills of young academics, researchers and professionals.

The foundation offers a scholarship to sponsor 5 free seats for the training.

  • Location: La Falaise Hotel, Yaoundé, Cameroon

 

Contextual Background

Africa faces significant challenges that demand innovative solutions, yet the continent's scientific research output remains limited. Hosting approximately 12% of the global population, Africa contributes less than 1% of academic publications. This disparity underscores the need for greater African leadership in scientific knowledge production and dissemination.


Scientific writing is crucial for validating research, advancing careers, and securing funding. However, African researchers often face barriers such as a lack of training in scientific writing and limited mentorship opportunities. The Nkafu Policy Institute, part of the Denis and Lenora Foretia Foundation, seeks to address these issues through its capacity-building program in scientific writing. This program aims to enhance writing skills, build confidence in publishing, and improve Africa’s representation in top-tier scientific journals.

 

Program Objectives

The primary goal of the Scientific and Manuscripts Writing Course is to enhance the writing and publishing skills of young African academics, researchers, and professionals. The course aims to:

  1. Train young scientists in scientific writing.

  2. Establish a mentoring network for scientific paper writing.

  3. Compile a directory of journals and scientific content publishers.

 

Expected Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants should:

  • Develop skills to produce high-quality research papers.

  • Gain practical tips for publishing in top-ranked journals.

  • Foster a strong sense of publication ethics.

  • Become ambassadors for future events organized by the foundation.

 

Target Audience

  • Master and PhD students

  • Early career researchers and professionals

 

Scholarship Eligibility

The foundation offers a scholarship to sponsor 5 free seats for the training. To be eligible for the scholarship applicants must:

  1. Be a student at Master or PhD level

  2. Demonstrate a strong motivation to attend the course

  3. Submit a recent, unpublished paper or conference abstract: It should contain all the following elements: Introduction, Material and methods, Results, Conclusion, Key words.

 

Program Format and Schedule

  • Format: Hybrid (In-Person at La Falaise Hotel and online via Zoom)

  • Schedule: March 11-12, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM

The syllabus includes the following modules:

1. Introduction to Scientific Writing

2. Scientific Communication

3. Referencing Systems and Reference Management

4. All About Journals

5. Introduction to Systematic Reviews

6. Ethical Publishing Practices

 

Application Procedure

Applications are to be completed entirely via the ONLINE PORTAL.
