Young Africans Research Academy (YARA) Fellowship Overview

The YARA Fellowship is designed to develop the next generation of indigenous researchers committed to solving Africa’s most pressing problems through high-quality, ethical, and relevant research. For the first cohort, YARA seeks 10 highly motivated undergraduate students from Ghana who are passionate about research and have a strong interest in pursuing a career in academia, research, or related fields.

 

Research Focus Areas:

  • Mathematics & Applied Mathematics: Develop open-source, data-driven optimization and post-quantum cryptography models for robust digital security.


  • Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning: Create explainable AI frameworks and edge computing solutions for ethical, real-time decision-making.


  • Bioinformatics & Genomics: Integrate multi-omics data with advanced algorithms to predict protein structures and drive precision medicine.


  • Sustainable Building Technologies: Design digital twins and test smart materials to revolutionize urban planning and resilient infrastructure.


  • Renewable Energy: Model hybrid renewable systems and optimize smart grid performance for a sustainable energy future.


  • Public Health Innovation: Develop real-time epidemic models and digital health solutions to enhance public health responses.


  • AgriTech & Food Security: Engineer precision agriculture systems using sensors and AI to boost crop productivity and resource efficiency.


  • Robotics & Automation: Build and simulate swarm robotics and human-robot collaboration platforms for diverse industrial applications.


  • Education Technology (EdTech): Innovate adaptive, AI-driven tutoring systems and immersive learning environments to personalize education.


  • Climate Science: Develop regional climate impact assessments with high-resolution data to inform sustainable policy and adaptation.

 

Fellowship Structure

The fellowship is divided into four phases, each focusing on a critical aspect of research training:

Phase 1.

  • Orientation & Foundation Building (Month 1-2)

  • Introduction to research ethics, methodologies, and mentorship pairing.


Phase 2.

  • Research Training & Proposal Development (Month 3-6)

  • Advanced research methods, data collection, and proposal writing.


Phase 3.

  • Independent Research & Mentorship (Month 7-10)

  • Hands-on research execution, mentorship, and guest lectures


Phase 4.

  • Research Presentation & Career Development (Month 11-12)

  • Presentation of findings, career workshops, and graduate school preparation

Eligibility Criteria

  3. Must be committed to completing the fellowship and producing a fully-fledged publishable research paper.

  4. Must aspire to pursue graduate-level studies (Master’s/PhD) and apply acquired research skills for career development.

 

Application Procedure

  1. Complete the Online Application Form: Fill out the application form available on the YARA website.

  2. Upload Required Documents: Submit an updated CV/resume, a letter of recommendation from a lecturer or academic advisor, and academic transcripts.

  3. Interview or Research Proposal Submission: Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview or may need to submit a research proposal.

  4. Final Selection: Selected fellows will receive confirmation and onboarding details.
