CAMHRA Scholarships Overview
Established within the SOAS Department of Anthropology and Sociology, CAMHRA serves as a globally oriented hub for innovative anthropological research, education, and public engagement on mental health. Collaborating with academic institutions, healthcare providers, policymakers, and service users, CAMHRA contributes unique anthropological insights to global discussions on understanding and addressing mental distress, as well as developing effective care systems.
Eligible Master's Programs
The CAMHRA Scholarships at SOAS University of London covers the following two programs:
The Master's programmes at CAMHRA are designed for individuals from diverse professional and academic backgrounds. The MA in Medical Anthropology and Mental Health integrates perspectives from social, cultural, medical, and psychological anthropology, enabling students to conduct original research. The MRes in Social Anthropology is tailored for those with prior degrees in social or cultural anthropology, aiming to pursue postgraduate research in anthropology and mental health, often as preparation for PhD studies.
Scholarship Benefits
Tuition Coverage: Each full-time scholarship covers the full tuition fees for the 2025/2026 academic year. Part-time students receive funding for tuition fees across two academic years (2025/2026 and 2026/2027).
Additional Costs: Please note that the scholarship does not include a stipend for accommodation and living expenses.
Eligibility Criteria
1. Academic Qualifications:
For MA in Medical Anthropology and Mental Health: Applicants must hold a minimum 2:1 bachelor's degree in a social science or humanities subject; or in health sciences, including medicine, psychology, nursing, or social work.
For MRes in Social Anthropology: Applicants must hold a minimum 2:1 bachelor's or master's degree in Anthropology.
2. Research Proposal: Candidates should have a well-defined research project that employs ethnographic methods to explore an issue related to mental health.
3. Application Status: Applicants must have submitted their application to the MA or MRes programme at SOAS but are not required to have received an offer of admission by the scholarship deadline.
4. Additional Considerations: Preference may be given to candidates with lived experience in mental health services, either as professionals or service users, and those from underrepresented and minoritized groups.
Application Procedure
1. Programme Application:
Submit an application for the desired programme:
MA in Medical Anthropology and Mental Health: Apply through the Taught Masters applications portal.
MRes in Social Anthropology: Apply via the Doctoral School.
2. Scholarship Application:
Complete the online scholarship application form by 11:59 pm UK local time on 30 April 2025.
3. Interview Process: Shortlisted candidates will be invited to online interviews by mid to late May 2025.

To assist prospective applicants, the CAMHRA team will host a webinar titled "Introduction to the MA Medical Anthropology and Mental Health" on Thursday, 3 April 2025, at 1:00 pm London time (BST/GMT +1).
