Data Governance in Africa Research Fund Overview
The Data Governance in Africa Research Fund seeks to recruit four African-based researchers to conduct empirical studies aligned with their expertise. These studies should respond to current data governance trends in the region and identify policy recommendations within the specified focus areas. Researchers are also expected to participate in a regional strategy to disseminate their findings and recommendations to various stakeholder groups, particularly policy influencers in their focus countries or regions.

Eligibility Criteria
Be an individual, network, or organization based in Africa
Legally able to receive funds in the form of grants from the Mozilla Foundation, a U.S. 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
Demonstrated understanding of African data governance challenges and opportunities
Ability to conduct rigorous research and provide actionable policy recommendations
Application Procedure
1. Registration:
Complete the initial application account registration on Fluxx by March 11, 2025, 6:30 PM GMT+2.
2. Application Submission:
After registration, submit the full application via Fluxx by March 31, 2025, 6:30 PM GMT+2.
3. Required Documents:
Research proposal detailing the study's objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes

Review and Selection
Grantees will be selected based on a review of applications by by Mozilla’s grantmaking team.
The criteria for reviewing applications will consider the following:
Geographic location and work focus of applicants
Applicant experience in the internet, AI and digital technology sector in Africa
Applicant familiarity with national or regional contexts, clear articulation of the data justice issue
Clearly defined methodology and impact, research plan, and budget
Only those projects that meet the grant criteria for this funding opportunity will be reviewed. All proposed grant decisions are subject to a legal review to confirm the applicant’s eligibility.
