🌐 About the YIL Fellowship
The Young Innovation Leaders (YIL) Fellowship was founded in 2018 by Dr. Obichi Obiajunwa with a vision to bridge the gap between formal education and the real-world demands of the workplace. Originally named the HELP Fellowship (Hutzpa Excellence Leadership Program), the programme was renamed the YIL Fellowship in 2019 to better reflect its mission of empowering young Africans to lead innovative change in their communities. YIL started with a bold idea: to equip young Africans with the skills to shift from passive consumers to proactive solution creators.
Africa faces a critical need for skilled leaders who can turn challenges into opportunities through innovative, locally driven solutions. The YIL Fellowship addresses this gap by empowering young professionals with the tools and mentorship they need to lead impactful change, fostering a new generation that can drive sustainable development across the continent.
Since its founding, the programme has built a remarkable track record. YIL's first partnership with Plan International in 2018 helped support prototype development and established a strong focus on female empowerment. In 2019, YIL expanded into Ghana and partnered with UNFPA Nigeria to run an innovation lab tackling urgent issues in maternal health and reproductive rights. In 2021, YIL collaborated with WIPO Nigeria, and in 2022, AUDA-NEPAD sponsored a bootcamp in Nairobi to support participants from East Africa. In 2023, YIL developed the IP-SALAYE programme with WIPO Nigeria, training National Youth Service Corps members to address community issues using intellectual property.
🧩 Fellowship Structure
The YIL Fellowship programme is designed in a three-staged strategy: selection, training, and mentoring.
Stage 1 — Selection
The selection process is multi-stage and competitive. This stage entails selection based on the measurable and extensible Seeds of Excellence candidates have grown. The best candidate from each group will be selected. Applicants progress through increasingly rigorous stages, with each stage unlocking the next and successful candidates receiving instructions on how to proceed.
Stage 2 — Training
The training stage uses the most productive and comprehensive means possible to educate and preserve the knowledge and principles of success of the participants. This training approach is results-oriented. Fellows engage in immersive learning covering innovation leadership, ecosystem research, problem-solving methodologies, and hands-on project development. While most fellowship activities are conducted virtually, selected participants also take part in a hybrid induction bootcamp hosted in Abuja, Nigeria.
Stage 3 — Mentorship
In the mentorship stage, the YIL Fellowship creates an effective means of communication with successful and experienced professionals in the required field of each candidate. Fellows are matched with top industry experts and thought leaders who guide their career growth, strategic thinking, and innovation practice throughout the programme.
Diploma in Innovation Management
Through a partnership with the African University of Science and Technology in Abuja, fellows have the opportunity to earn a diploma in innovation management upon completing the programme — a formal, institutionally recognised credential that adds lasting professional value beyond the fellowship experience itself.
